Chinese New Year movies to watch

With the arrival of the Chinese New Year holidays, one of the favourite activities of Singaporeans, amid all the festive ‘duties’, is to go to the cinema.

This is traditionally the season for revellers to head out to watch feel-good Asian movies made especially to usher in the year.

Singaporeans tend to go to the movies after reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve – a night where Chinese are encouraged to stay up late, in the belief that this custom helps to ‘prolong’ their parents’ lives – or on the first two days of the new year, in between or after visits to relatives and friends.

Such typically celebratory films belong in a genre all their own, called the he sui pian (New Year Celebration movies). They usually have broad appeal, feature ensemble casts – oftentimes headlined by big-name stars – and contain slapstick comedy interspersed throughout a relatively frivolous plot.

Kungfu fighting is also a prominent part of such films, particularly in those steeped in historical storylines, with the usual talents being A-list action stars like Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Donnie Yen.

This year, with the first day of the Lunar calendar falling upon the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day, there is also a bountiful crop of romantic movies.

There are also exciting new films that have nothing to do with the new year or Valentine’s per se, but happen to be released at this point of the year. With the Oscars just weeks away on 7 March, nominated films Nine and Bright Star are among the sneak previews this new year long weekend.

All in all, it’s a great holiday to go to the movies and savour the festive spirit.
